Wk 14 – Artist Conversation – Lourdes Martinez

Last week I met Lourdes Martinez and her major is Photography. She is a student at CSULB. Her art work was on display in the Werby-Gallery. Her image is on a glass and she made it this way because she didn’t want it to be traditional. She said that usually when you take a photograph it’s always the same thing, putting it on a frame with glass and on the wall but she wanted her art work to be different. 

What inspired her to create her art work was from a picture of Earth in 1990 that is 66 billion km away. She zoomed in on the picture of Earth and made it into four pixels. She thought the image was interesting because it makes you think how small we are in the universe. She wants her audience to see how much you can do and see with photograph and technology, that it’s powerful but also humbling. 

She also wanted her creation to look like a science slide or science picture. She said that she doesn’t like making pictures it’s more about thinking about it. She begins with an idea that she is fascinated about and thinks about how she is going to make it in a reasonable way. Unfortunately she doesn’t have a website but she did say that she might make an Instagram account in the future. 

The description of Loures Martinez in the pamphlet at the Werby-Gallery was really interesting. I like how it was about outer space and that the image of Earth from 66 billion km away became popular. It did made me think about how small we are in the universe and that Earth is really just a speck in outer space. I also like how she didn’t want to do a traditional photograph and instead she put her image on a glass. I didn’t know what her art work was at  first but after talking to her it made me appreciate her creation and the meaning behind it.

Wk 13 – Artist Conversation – Tyler Turett

Last week I met Tyler Turett. He is a animator and illustrator. This is his last semester at CSULB and he lives in Huntington Beach. Right now he is interning at a studio called Shadow Machine. Also, this is his website http://tylerturett.wix.com/tylerturettanimation

His inspirations were watching cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon when he was a kid. Also Tim Burton movies. How he makes his illustrations is by sketching it out on a tablet called cintiq. He’ll sketch it out and play with the character design. He designs around the personality of the character that he is making. 

Tyler is working on a show called Jeff and some aliens that will be shown on Comedy Central. He talked a little bit about the different scenes that he had displayed in the gallery. The one with the two frogs is about the short frog being mad at the talk frog for being inside his tank. The different character scenes are from his internship. He also made a black and white storyboard about two mice. 

One of Tyler’s characters reminded me of a cartoon show that I used to watch called Invader Zim. His other animations look like they would be funny and silly characters. I can imagine his animations being on Comedy Central or on Adult Swim. All his characters display different emotions. One of the cartoons looks angry, another cartoon is getting beaten by some carrots and there’s a sloth watching T.V. I like that not all his characters are humans, some are animals or aliens.

Wk 12 – Artist conversation – Christopher Michael Linquata

Last Thursday I met Christopher Michael Linquata. He is a senior at CSULB and he lives in San Fernando Valley. His major is representational drawing.  You can find him on Facebook, just look for Christo Linquata. He is also on Instagram, his username is icon5350.

Linquata used oil paint and it took him ten months to finish his paintings. He worked on two canvases at a time for 18 hours a day. His favorite artist is Pierro della Francesca. He was inspired by nature and Renaissance paintings. The people in the painting are his friends and family. He also included himself in each painting. 

 His paintings have a religious theme and it’s also related to Greek myths. He started off with the idea and looked for locations that would fit. He chose a location called sunken city in San Pedro. He focused on light, colors and space. He started on a small painting first before working on the large paintings. He used his imagination, memory, and pictures to create his images. 

When I was looking at Linquata’s paintings I kind of already knew that it was sunken city because of the graffiti on the rocks. I had been to sunken city once and it’s a nice view of the beach. I wasn’t sure what the paintings were trying to portray but my first thought was that it looked like a group of friends hanging out, taking pictures and tagging on the rocks. I thought it was really awesome that Linquata included himself in the paintings. I also liked that he painted a portrait of his family.

Wk 11 – Artist conversation – Kathy Yoon

Kathy Yoon is majoring in Ceramics and it is her last semester at CSULB. Her Instagram is Kathy.c.yoon if you want to take a look at her posts. Her ceramic pieces represent moments and feelings that she felt during a specific time in 2015. She loved making each one of her pieces and her favorite is the figure with the heart balloon. 

All her art pieces are made from ceramic. She used yarn and tissue for the small details. She didn’t use any reference photos. She also sketched a few of her forms before making them. It takes two to six weeks to make her creations. 

Yoon is not sure if she is going to sell her art individually or all together. She has also thought about working for Pixar animation studios. She talked about one of her pieces which was the one with a tutu. She said that she enjoyed making this piece because it’s about being silly and not caring about what people think. Her favorite is the figure with the heart balloon because it’s happy. 

When I was looking at Yoon’s art I can relate to most of her figures. There’s one that looks sad and it’s curled up holding its heart or something. It made me think about a bad break up. There’s another figure that has its head against the wall and to me it means that it’s done with life or it’s stressed out. Some figures I couldn’t figure out what the emotion was. The one that stood out to me had a red person or something hanging out of its ear or head. My favorite was the figure holding the heart balloon. It made me think about when you have a crush on someone or having your heart on your sleeve type of thing. Yoon’s art also reminded me of Tim Burton’s movies. Her art has a cute but kind of creepy look.

Wk 10 – Artist Conversation – Thomas Cressman

My artist conversation for this week is Thomas Cressman. You can find him on Instagram, his username is Thom_cress6. He is a 5th year at CSULB. His art is made from metal and he makes jewelry. Cressman became interested in working with metals ever since he took a metals class in high school. 

His show is called “Living Forms” and the materials he used are copper, metal and brass. His artwork are interpretations of living organisms. He focuses on the organism’s structure, form and how it lives in its space. He is fascinated by the natural developments of clams and corals. Also how they function and exist in their environment. His favorite piece is the “Giant Blue Clam”.  

His creations start off as a flat sheet of copper and he makes a cut out. He uses fire to loosen the molecules in the metals. Then he hammers it to the shape that he wants. It takes him about a week or month to make his art. He also works with silver. 

Cressman’s art made think of sea creatures and the plants that live in the ocean. My favorite piece was the “Deteriorating Lights” and “Giant Blue Clam”. It reminded me of coral where sea animals could live in. The plant looking art piece that was on the wall made me think of the flowers and mushrooms from Alice in Wonderland.

Wk 9 – Artist Conversation – Maccabee Shelley

This past Thursday I met Maccabee Shelley. His artwork was displayed in the Gatov-West gallery at CSULB. The materials he used to make his sculptures are glass, plastic, paint and things he found in dumpsters. What he wants the audience to experience is something that they haven’t seen before and expand their view of the world and art. 

Shelley is currently a student at CSULB. He grew up in Los Angeles then moved to San Francisco. Then moved to Long Beach for school. He has a degree in Studio Art from Humboldt State University. He’s had many exhibitions all over California since 2009. 

Shelley’s sculptures are unique and creative. I haven’t seen this style of art before and I enjoyed looking at these sculptures. It makes you wonder how it was made and the meaning behind it. I like how the colors in the sculptures have movement. It looks as if it’s melting from the sculpture.

Wk 8 – Artist Conversation – Rhiannon Aarons

Last week I met Rhiannon Aarons. She is a MFA student and it is her second year at CSULB. Her artwork is a combination of human and animal anatomy. These images were scanned from original anatomy and zoology books from the 1800’s.

Her artwork is about the human female anatomy. In history there have been many myths about the female anatomy and continue to be seen as facts. Also, how it relates to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Her images have a serpent body and the serpent is portrayed as feminine. It took her one year to complete her creations including other pieces of her work that were not displayed in the gallery. 

Aarons’s artwork caught my attention because of the massive details in the images. Also because it was something that I have never seen before. I think the combination of human and animal anatomy was a great idea. I like the meaning behind her artwork and it taught me new things about the history of female anatomy.

Wk 7 – Artist Conversation – Jane Weibel

        Yesterday I met Jane Weibel. Her major is Ceramics. She has one more year to graduate from CSULB. Her favorite artist is Jessica Stockholder. She has been doing ceramics for two years. 
        The materials she used to make her artwork are ceramic, fiber and rope. Her ceramic pieces took 2 months to make. Then 36 hours to install her artwork in the gallery. Her Instagram is Janemargarette.

          Jane Weibel’s artwork represents her childhood memories and the innocence of it. She had a few pictures in the gallery of her as a kid. She was with her family on a sled in the winter. Her artwork had bright colors and children’s clothing. There were swings and mugs with teddy bears. Jane wants the audience to contemplate their childhood and think about who they are. To reflect on their memories and cherish them. 

          When I was looking at Jane Weibel’s creations, it made me feel like I was in a jungle gym. It made me think about when I was in Elementary School. Recess was my favorite time of the day.  The ceramic swings reminded me of how much I enjoyed getting on the swings at the park with my family. I still love going on the swings but I don’t go to the park as much. It made me miss my childhood because life was simple. It was just about going outside to play. My favorite pieces were the kid’s clothing hanging on the ceramic hangers and the mugs with teddy bears.

Wk 6 – Artist conversation – Alice Adreini

This past Thursday I talked to Alice Adreini. She is getting a MFA in contemporary drawing and painting. She’s been attending CSULB for 3 semesters. She has a theatre background and has been painting for 5 years. She’s from Minnesota and is currently living in Long Beach. 

Her three paintings are about space and gardens. The two large paintings took her a couple weeks to finish and the small painting was a couple months. She used oil paint. The soldiers in her painting add a different dynamic. It also adds a destructive element or a protecting element. Alice also said that she wanted to add a conflicted element. The soldiers are a reminder that there is conflict and space is threatened by conflict. Alice wants the audience to feel wrapped up in a a garden space and feel sublime.

Alice Adreini’s painting was inspired by her mother because she likes gardening. Her mother would find toy soldiers in the dirt. This is what inspired Alice to add soldiers to her painting. 

Alice Adreini’s paintings were bright and colorful. I like that there were soldiers in her painting, it reminded me of the movie called Toy Story. The painting with the blue flower is my favorite. It kind of has this 3D look. It looks like the soldiers are protecting the flowers.

Wk5 – Artist Conversation – Josh Benz and Karen Solis

Josh and Karen’s painting was in the Gatov-East Gallery. Karen painted the realistic figures that look like they are watching television. Josh painted abstract figures around Karen’s painting. They used oil paint on a canvas. I talked to Josh because he was at the gallery. I think Karen wasn’t able to attend that day. Josh has a Facebook where he posts his paintings. His name on Facebook is Josh Benz. 

Josh Benz is a Senior and it’s his last year at CSULB. His major is Drawing and Painting. Josh started his painting 3 weeks ago. He majored in drawing and painting because he was influenced by his grandparents who are also artists. When I asked Josh what his painting is about he said it represents a transition from childhood to adulthood. He used different influences for his painting. Paints whatever he’s feeling at the moment. There are different scenes in the painting. One of the scenes is dark and erotic. He likes to use lots of color and he paints abstract figures. One of his figures looks like a person holding a child. Another figure is a portrait of himself holding a teddy bear and the teddy bear represents his childhood. The woman figure next to his portrait is like an alter ego of himself. 

Josh and Karen took turns painting and talked about ideas. He explained Karen’s painting style. She paints realistic figures and one of the figures that she painted is a portrait of herself. Her painting is two people that look like they are watching television. They are laying down and one of the figures has a remote in her hand. It also looks like these figures are floating on water and I guess they are watching all the different scenes that Josh painted. 

What I thought about the painting is that there is lots of color and the two figures watching T.V have so much detail and it’s realistic. The abstract scenes in the painting were interesting. I was thinking of what each scene represents. In one scene it looks like there might be a dark meaning or memory. There’s also this peacefulness of the two people laying down watching T.V. and the water around them. It makes me want to see more from each artist. I think it’s a good idea to collaborate with another artist because it adds more creativity and uniqueness to their art.
