Wk 14 – Artist Conversation – Lourdes Martinez

Last week I met Lourdes Martinez and her major is Photography. She is a student at CSULB. Her art work was on display in the Werby-Gallery. Her image is on a glass and she made it this way because she didn’t want it to be traditional. She said that usually when you take a photograph it’s always the same thing, putting it on a frame with glass and on the wall but she wanted her art work to be different. 

What inspired her to create her art work was from a picture of Earth in 1990 that is 66 billion km away. She zoomed in on the picture of Earth and made it into four pixels. She thought the image was interesting because it makes you think how small we are in the universe. She wants her audience to see how much you can do and see with photograph and technology, that it’s powerful but also humbling. 

She also wanted her creation to look like a science slide or science picture. She said that she doesn’t like making pictures it’s more about thinking about it. She begins with an idea that she is fascinated about and thinks about how she is going to make it in a reasonable way. Unfortunately she doesn’t have a website but she did say that she might make an Instagram account in the future. 

The description of Loures Martinez in the pamphlet at the Werby-Gallery was really interesting. I like how it was about outer space and that the image of Earth from 66 billion km away became popular. It did made me think about how small we are in the universe and that Earth is really just a speck in outer space. I also like how she didn’t want to do a traditional photograph and instead she put her image on a glass. I didn’t know what her art work was at  first but after talking to her it made me appreciate her creation and the meaning behind it.

Wk 14 – Classmate Conversation – Nicholas Cedeno

Last Thursday I met Nicholas Cedeno. He is a second year at CSULB and his major is Criminal Justice. He lives in Norwalk and went to Lakewood High School. His hobbies are hiking, hanging out with friends and family. His favorite color is blue and he loves eating chicken. This is his website nicocedeno.wordpress.com

The question of the week asked “What Art has made the biggest impact on your life?”. Nicholas said that the movie Annie has recently impacted his life. He watched this movie on Thanksgiving and it made him want to adopt children in the future. This past Friday I went to a place called Gaslamp and they had a band playing 80s music. The band was amazing and my friends and I were really into the music. We were singing and dancing. I really like how my friends were having a good time and even though we don’t listen to 80s music on the regular, we still had fun. I think this night impacted my life because it made me appreciate my friends even more because they bring positive vibes and it’s always fun with them.

Wk 13 – Artist Conversation – Tyler Turett

Last week I met Tyler Turett. He is a animator and illustrator. This is his last semester at CSULB and he lives in Huntington Beach. Right now he is interning at a studio called Shadow Machine. Also, this is his website http://tylerturett.wix.com/tylerturettanimation

His inspirations were watching cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon when he was a kid. Also Tim Burton movies. How he makes his illustrations is by sketching it out on a tablet called cintiq. He’ll sketch it out and play with the character design. He designs around the personality of the character that he is making. 

Tyler is working on a show called Jeff and some aliens that will be shown on Comedy Central. He talked a little bit about the different scenes that he had displayed in the gallery. The one with the two frogs is about the short frog being mad at the talk frog for being inside his tank. The different character scenes are from his internship. He also made a black and white storyboard about two mice. 

One of Tyler’s characters reminded me of a cartoon show that I used to watch called Invader Zim. His other animations look like they would be funny and silly characters. I can imagine his animations being on Comedy Central or on Adult Swim. All his characters display different emotions. One of the cartoons looks angry, another cartoon is getting beaten by some carrots and there’s a sloth watching T.V. I like that not all his characters are humans, some are animals or aliens.

Wk 13 – Classmate conversation – Filimon Soltero

Last Thursday I met one of my classmates from Art110 and his name is Filimon Soltero. His website is filimonsoltero.com if you would like to take a look at his posts. Filimon is a third year at CSULB. He is majoring in Health Care Administration. He lives in Compton and commutes to school. His hobbies are playing video games, soccer and spending time with friends and family. 

The question of the week asked what we thought about Art110 at the beginning of the semester and how we see it now. Filimon said that at first he thought that he was going to be drawing or painting for Art110. He also didn’t know that much about art. He wasn’t expecting to do different activities but he still enjoyed it.  This class has taught him about different types of art. He said that now he views art as something that can be everywhere. 

How I saw Art110 before the semester started is that maybe we were going to be making drawings or paintings but at the same time I really wasn’t sure what I would be doing in this class. How I view Art110 now, it made me look at art in a different light. There are activities that we did that I would have not seen as art before but now I do. It made me more open minded about art and I think it’s awesome that we get to see different artists every Thursday.

Wk 12 – Artist conversation – Christopher Michael Linquata

Last Thursday I met Christopher Michael Linquata. He is a senior at CSULB and he lives in San Fernando Valley. His major is representational drawing.  You can find him on Facebook, just look for Christo Linquata. He is also on Instagram, his username is icon5350.

Linquata used oil paint and it took him ten months to finish his paintings. He worked on two canvases at a time for 18 hours a day. His favorite artist is Pierro della Francesca. He was inspired by nature and Renaissance paintings. The people in the painting are his friends and family. He also included himself in each painting. 

 His paintings have a religious theme and it’s also related to Greek myths. He started off with the idea and looked for locations that would fit. He chose a location called sunken city in San Pedro. He focused on light, colors and space. He started on a small painting first before working on the large paintings. He used his imagination, memory, and pictures to create his images. 

When I was looking at Linquata’s paintings I kind of already knew that it was sunken city because of the graffiti on the rocks. I had been to sunken city once and it’s a nice view of the beach. I wasn’t sure what the paintings were trying to portray but my first thought was that it looked like a group of friends hanging out, taking pictures and tagging on the rocks. I thought it was really awesome that Linquata included himself in the paintings. I also liked that he painted a portrait of his family.

Wk 12 – Classmate conversation – Zeida Gonzalez

Last week I met Zeida Gonzalez and she is in my Art 110 class. Her major is film and it is her third year at CSULB. She lives in Whittier and commutes to school. She likes to read and her favorite author is Dean Koonts. She loves to procrastinate. Her favorite shows are Dexter and Parks and Rec. We both like to watch American Horror Story. 

The question of the week asked what color makes you happy and what color calms you. Zeida said that the color teal makes her happy because it is her favorite color. She also said that the color blue is what calms her. She said that it makes her think of the park, beach and sky. It makes her feel stress free. I also said that the color blue calms me and it reminds me of the beach and sky. The color yellow is what makes me happy. It reminds me of the sun and it brightens up the room.

Wk 11 – Activity – Fiber Art

 
The activity for this week was to make a fiber art creation that can hang on the wall. I decided to YouTube fiber art wall hangings to get ideas or learn how to make a specific one. I watched this video that showed how to make a simple fiber art creation and all I needed was a dowel,white yarn, scissors and rit dye.

First, I cut long pieces of yarn and folded it in half. Then I tied each piece of yarn on the dowel. I included pictures of the process below.    

    
I continued to tie each piece of yarn across the dowel. Then I got the rit dye ready in the sink. All I had to do was to place the dye powder in hot water and stir it. Then I dipped my yarn in the pink dye first. After 20 minutes I did the same process but with the purple dye. Definitely wear gloves because it will stain your skin. 
After 20 minutes in the purple dye, I squeezed out all the water from the yarn then blow dried it. I cut the the yarn short from the start and left the end of it long to add some kind of style to it. Then I cut another piece of yarn and tied it on both ends so that it can hang on a wall.

This is the result. 🙂  

I have never used rit dye but it was really easy and simple. This is also my first time making a wall hanging  from fiber. The whole process was easy but it was time consuming cutting and tying each piece of yarn to the dowel. I think it took me about an hour to tie the yarn. I thought the pink and purple dye was going to be brighter but I like that it came out as a pastel pink and purple. I liked this activity it was satisfying and I’m happy with the results. It made me feel crafty. I think this activity did change my view of fiber art because you can do so many things with yarn and make it into a wall hanging. It is satisfying to know that this creation on my wall was made by me and I think it came out great. It opened my eyes to new ways to decorate my room or anywhere in my house.

Wk 11 – Artist conversation – Kathy Yoon

Kathy Yoon is majoring in Ceramics and it is her last semester at CSULB. Her Instagram is Kathy.c.yoon if you want to take a look at her posts. Her ceramic pieces represent moments and feelings that she felt during a specific time in 2015. She loved making each one of her pieces and her favorite is the figure with the heart balloon. 

All her art pieces are made from ceramic. She used yarn and tissue for the small details. She didn’t use any reference photos. She also sketched a few of her forms before making them. It takes two to six weeks to make her creations. 

Yoon is not sure if she is going to sell her art individually or all together. She has also thought about working for Pixar animation studios. She talked about one of her pieces which was the one with a tutu. She said that she enjoyed making this piece because it’s about being silly and not caring about what people think. Her favorite is the figure with the heart balloon because it’s happy. 

When I was looking at Yoon’s art I can relate to most of her figures. There’s one that looks sad and it’s curled up holding its heart or something. It made me think about a bad break up. There’s another figure that has its head against the wall and to me it means that it’s done with life or it’s stressed out. Some figures I couldn’t figure out what the emotion was. The one that stood out to me had a red person or something hanging out of its ear or head. My favorite was the figure holding the heart balloon. It made me think about when you have a crush on someone or having your heart on your sleeve type of thing. Yoon’s art also reminded me of Tim Burton’s movies. Her art has a cute but kind of creepy look.

Wk 11 – Classmate conversation – Jasmynn Nguyen

Last week I met Jasmynn Nguyen from my Art 110 class. She is a third year at CSULB and is majoring in Child Development. She wants to work with autistic or disabled children. She lives in Westminster and commutes to school. She loves to go shopping and enjoys buying make up. 

For this week’s question of the week it asked if we think tattoos are art, if designing your own make it more meaningful and what tattoo would we get. Jasmynn said that tattoos are art and she would want to get a quote on her arm or her Dad’s birthday year. She said that it is more personal if you create it but even if you pick a tattoo from a book you can still personalize it. We also talked about our own tattoos and she has one on her back. It is a bird cage with birds flying out of it. I have a lotus flower on my back and some other small tattoos.

 I definitely think that tattoos are art especially if it’s done by someone who is a professional. I would want to get a mermaid tattoo on my arm or leg. My sister and I  have talked about getting a matching mermaid tattoo just need to save up first. I also think that it does make it more personal if you design your tattoo. If you choose a tattoo from a book it can still be meaningful, it all depends on the person who is getting it. You can still customize it by telling the tattoo artist what colors you want or what style you want.

Wk 10 – Activity – Game Design

For this week’s activity we learned about Geocaching and how to use it. This was my first time using this app. I was a little bit worried about not being able to find someone’s geocache but once I started looking for one at my school it became really fun. I was extremely excited when I found my first geocache and it wasn’t that difficult to find it. It was fun looking at all the small items that were inside the Altoids tin can. There was a toy soldier and a one direction pin. I also really like the location of this geocache because it was behind a metal sign by the stairs of the school’s parking structure. (By the way it was my Professor’s geocache😁)

After I found my first geocache I wanted to look for another one that was nearby but unfortunately I couldn’t find it and gave up. Then there was another geocache at my school and that one was easy to find. I was a little worried about what people would think because I was looking around some bushes and trees and maybe I looked like a weirdo. Also because it’s a busy street and there’s always cars passing by or people walking to class. This geocache had a few items so it wasn’t that interesting to look at but I was happy that I found it. Overall this game was a lot of fun and it makes me want to go find more geocaches. It opened my eyes to this new world of geocaching and I think it’s awesome that many people have participated in this game. 

I had some difficulty figuring out where to place my geocache but I finally decided to hide it at my school. I’m excited to see if people will find my geocache and what items will be traded in my tin can. The items that I put in my tin can are a Sandy keychain, bracelet, Hello Kitty paper and a corona bottle cap.  Also a little pink note pad for people to sign in.
